If you’re experiencing leg pain, swelling, varicose veins, or other symptoms of vein disease, a consultation with a vein specialist is the first step toward relief. At Arlington Vein Institute, we take the time to understand your concerns and provide a personalized treatment plan. Here’s what you can expect during your vein consultation.

A Warm Welcome & Medical History Review

Your visit begins with a warm welcome from our team. We’ll ask about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and any previous treatments. It’s important to share details about leg pain, swelling, heaviness, skin changes, or family history of vein disease, as these can help guide our evaluation.

A Physical Examination

Your vein specialist will examine your legs, looking for visible signs of vein disease, such as bulging veins, discoloration, or swelling. Even if you don’t have visible varicose veins, underlying vein issues could still be causing your symptoms. You can bring your own shorts to wear during the exam, or we will provide you with disposable shorts for your convenience.

Ultrasound Evaluation

To get a clear picture of your vein health, we often perform a duplex ultrasound. This can be scheduled for a future visit or can scheduled on the same day as the consultation. This painless, non-invasive test uses sound waves to assess blood flow and detect vein reflux (poor circulation due to valve dysfunction). The ultrasound helps us determine the severity of your vein condition and the best treatment options.

Personalized Treatment Plan

If an ultrasound is performed, a personalized treatment plan will be created and reviewed with the doctor, typically on the same day. Depending on your condition, we may recommend:

  • Lifestyle Modifications – Compression stockings, exercise, or leg elevation

  • Minimally Invasive Treatments – Such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), sclerotherapy, or Venaseal closure

We’ll explain each option, answer your questions, and ensure you feel confident about your next steps.

Insurance & Next Steps

Before you leave, our team will provide you with a cost estimate based on your insurance coverage, so there are no surprise bills. Many vein treatments are covered by insurance, especially if they are deemed medically necessary. We’ll help you navigate the process and schedule any follow-up visits.
