Radio Frequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a safe and minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and improve leg health. This effective treatment uses heat energy delivered through radiofrequency waves to close damaged veins, relieving symptoms such as pain, swelling, heaviness, and fatigue in the legs. Once treated, the closed vein is gradually absorbed by the body, and blood flow is naturally redirected to healthier veins.
The procedure begins with a detailed ultrasound evaluation to map out the affected veins. During the treatment, a small incision is made to insert a thin catheter into the diseased vein. Guided by ultrasound, the catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the vein walls, causing them to heat, collapse, and seal shut. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.
Radiofrequency ablation is quick, typically lasting about 15 to 20 minutes, and requires no stitches or large incisions. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and are able to resume their normal activities within a day or two, making it a convenient option for busy lifestyles.
Patients often notice a reduction in symptoms like pain and swelling within days of the procedure, while the cosmetic appearance of their legs continues to improve as the treated veins are absorbed over time. Wearing compression stockings as recommended by your provider can further support your recovery and enhance your results.
While radiofrequency ablation is highly safe and effective, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks. These may include mild bruising, temporary numbness, or, in rare cases, blood clots. At Arlington Vein Institute, our team is highly experienced in performing RFA and takes every precaution to ensure your safety and achieve the best possible outcome.
